Ask in any kid, playing inside the sandbox is fun enough by itself, but an excessive amount of moisture will turn your grainy playground right into a lumpy mess. Researchers at UC Davis have cooked up one solution: an augmented reality sandbox. The project uses a Kinect sensor along with a digital projector and a little bit software to overlay topographical data and simulated water over a standard -- and dry -- sandbox. The result is an augmented environment which might be used to educate geographic, geologic and hydrological concepts. The team hopes the project may help them develop hands-on exhibits for science museums, teaching visitors about contour lines, watersheds, catchment areas and more.
