The Vikings lost 76-6 to Catalan Dragons on Saturday, their seventh defeat in nine outings this season.

"This year is all psychological," Betts told BBC Radio Merseyside. "Our biggest challenge was that we knew there could be some really dark days this year.

"Its a difficult ask for a facet to be out of the contest for seven years."

He continued: "Im going to be calling on juniors which have got no Super League experience, no years behind them within the gym and no time spent at the field. Our squad is our squad.

"We cant visit the player tree and pick players off. We cant find those players out of skinny air and each side, especially over the Easter period, has got a completely tough programme and theyre not only going to provide players away."

Widnes dropped back to the underside of the table after conceding 13 tries of their worst-ever Super League defeat.

"They came from a defeat at Wakefield that they felt quite aggrieved by," said Betts. "They felt the performance they installed wasnt ok last week and we just caught the backlash of that.

"We went toe to toe with them for a piece, but we ended up getting a great hiding."

Meanwhile, winger Paddy Flynn has signed a two-year extension to his contract, keeping him with Widnes until the tip of 2014.

Flynn has scored six tries in eight appearances thus far this season.

"Ive really enjoyed the past four years on the club and that i couldnt have wished for it to have gone any better," said the 24-year-old.

"Having been full-time for 6 months now, the step-up was everything I hoped it'd be and a piece more too.

"Theres no better feeling than getting up within the morning and going right into a job that you just love and where you're feeling appreciated.

"The Widnes supporters were absolutely fantastic with me from day one and, hopefully, both individually and as a team we will be able to give them plenty to get serious about over the following couple of seasons."
