Late goals typical, says Ferguson

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said his sides late surge to overcome Blackburn was typical of Manchester Uniteds resolve.

United looked set for a frustrating draw at Ewood Park before Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young struck contained in the final 10 minutes to open up a five-point lead over Manchester City.

Ferguson said: "It was an extended night. We needed to persevere and in due course we got our rewards for it.

"The goals came so late, which typifies the history of the club."

If United beat Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford of their next match, rivals City will kick off their away game at Arsenal on Sunday afternoon eight points adrift.

But Ferguson - who has already won 12 Premier League titles - doesn't believe the title race is over.

He said: "There are seven games left and my experience is that it doesnt matter what points you might have, its practically the subsequent game.

"It doesnt matter whether it is next Sunday, next Wednesday, the Sunday after that - they're all big ones.

"The players are prepared for that. We can fight right to the tip in all of the games for the ideal to win the matches."

For all their possession, United were still indebted to goalkeeper David de Gea when he tipped over Marcus Olssons fine strike on the end of the 1st half, after which saved Grant Hanleys header from the subsequent corner.

The Spaniard were at fault during Blackburns win at Old Trafford on New Years Eve and was subsequently dropped, but have been much improved since he returned to the side and won praise from Ferguson.

"De Geas progress is plain, everyone can see that," Ferguson said.

"He made three great first-half saves. David kept us inside the game.

"Hes growing in stature and confidence. Weve always known he had great ability.

"We had Blackburn under the cosh but they were dangerous at the break."
