Blues criticised over Henson exit

Cardiff Blues were criticised for his or her decision to sack Gavin Henson for misbehaviour on a flight from Glasgow.

The previous Wales star was dismissed on Monday with the club saying it "sent out a transparent message that behaviour like that won't be tolerated".

But Blues star Casey Laulala said on Twitter: "It wasnt bad in any respect. Been blown out of proportion. Club are only amateurs coping with things."

Ex-Ospreys boss Lyn Jones described the verdict as "inexcusable".

However, BBC pundit Jonathan Davies said it was "sad but understandable" and Hensons fault.

Former Wales star Tom Shanklin said financial considerations may need played an element within the decision but former Cardiff, Wales and Lions fly-half Gareth Davies, a former Cardiff RFC chief executive, said he hoped that was not the case.

"Im sure thered be speculation that maybe this was associated with cost-cutting," said former Wales and Cardiff fly-half Gareth Davies.

Gavin Henson fact-file

  • Born: 1 February 1982; Bridgend
  • Positions: Fly-half, centre, full-back
  • Clubs: Swansea, Ospreys, Saracens, Toulon, Cardiff Blues
  • Test honours: 33 Wales caps, 1 Lions cap

"Id want to think not. Id want to think that the Blues would have decided according to purely the facts of the weekend.

"i'm hoping it was purely right down to showing a formal example - what the club, and indeed any club or national team, would expect from professional players."

London Welsh boss Jones said the Blues team management ought to be held to account over the events that resulted in Henson misbehaving drunk at the Saturday morning flight home following Fridays Pro12 defeat at Glasgow.

Jones said: "They need to be watching who was running that trip to Glasgow, theyve got to be watching the team manager. Why was [Henson] drinking within the morning- Why didnt [the team manager] stamp that out-

"Hensons not innocent - hes made a mistake, like several other player. Like Danny Care [did], but has he been sacked by Quins- There are several hundred examples like this.

"It took a medicine scandal in Bath to dispose of some players. For Gavin to be spent time to dry like here is inexcusable."

Former Wales Test star Shanklin says Hensons behaviour - which the player himself admitted was "inexcusable" - gave the Blues an opportunity to chop their costs amid difficult financial times in Welsh rugby.

"We all know what he has done and perhaps what he can have done. But there's only 1 person accountable and sadly, that's Gavin himself and i am sure he'll be bitterly disappointed when he looks back on his careerรข€

Jonathan Davies BBC rugby pundit

He said: "When you examine the image in Welsh rugby today, teams wish to lower your expenses.

"Players that come into clubs are on an enormous wage. If theyre not playing, then theyre certainly going to appear to remove them by the tip of the year.

"Because its just wasted money, isnt it-

"If players are on a large wage you will want them to be playing and getting value for money week in, week out.

"And that they probably werent getting that with Gavin."

Shanklin added: "i believe he can still play rugby but its all the way down to clubs in the event that they like to gamble on him. But he's a tremendous name who puts bums on seats."

Former Wales fly-half Davies describes himself as a "fan" of Henson, but says the Blues stance is understandable.

He said: "First thing is its very sad, because Cardiff Blues gave [Henson] a chance and hes quite messed it up again.

"As theyve said, theyve got a responsibility to their supporters and, on this professional age, to the sponsors - and he seems to have blown another opportunity.

"Im not surprised as it is a pro game now and youve got to behave accordingly.

"Sponsors have a responsibility over who they're linked to and unfortunately with such things as this, its going to make the papers.

"So its very sad and he did have a great deallots to give, but theres only 1 person accountable and sadly, thats Gavin himself and Im sure hell be bitterly disappointed when he looks back on his career."
