Milan loss saved Arsenal - Petit

Arsenals 4-0 humiliation away to AC Milan in February was the catalyst behind their recent run of excellent form, believes former Gunner Emmanuel Petit.

The north Londoners have won six out of 7 matches after the defeat and climbed to 3rd within the Premier League.

"Maybe they grew up of course the criticism and after the humiliation against Milan," Petit told BBC Sport.

"Maybe they had to be at a undeniable point to grasp what they will do at the pitch."

Arsenals defeat inside the first leg in their Chapions League last-16 tie on the San Siro is their heaviest in European competition and was described as "a disaster" by manager Arsene Wenger.

ARSENALS LAST SIX MATCHES

  • Won: 6
  • Goals for: 16
  • Goals against: 4
  • Points gained on Tottenham: 13

They were dumped out of the FA Cup after a tame performance against Sunderland three days later and located themselves two goals down after 35 minutes of the north London derby against Tottenham here weekend.

Before the match against Spurs, Petit himself had questioned Wengers approach and described his team as "mentally very weak" and "playing like they dont know what to do at the pitch".

But Arsenal staged a stirring comeback to overtake Spurs 5-2 and feature won every match since.

Petit doesn't believe that some underlying problems on the Emirates Stadium were solved however.

"While you lose against Milan after which must play the derby against Spurs, it's worthwhile to react," he added.

"In the event that they can show this big character in fact the criticism, they prove to everyone that we were wrong but firstly they proved to themselves that they were wrong in addition."
