Kenyan Coast Explosions Kill 1

Two almost simultaneous grenade attacks within the Kenyan port city of Mombasa and a close-by small town late Saturday killed one person and wounded at the least 24 others.

Officials say unidentified attackers threw a grenade at a Christian religious gathering in Mtwapa, a town north of Mombasa, killing a girl and wounding greater than 20 people.

In Mombasa, a second grenade attack was done against a cafe near the city's main stadium.  There have been reports of 2 people wounded in that attack.

Kenya has seen several hit-and-run grenade attacks within the capital, Nairobi, since Kenyan troops entered neighboring Somalia last October to fight the unconventional Islamist group al-Shabab.  But this was the primary incident in Mombasa, a preferred holiday destination.

This is the most recent in a string of grenade attacks at the capital since Kenya sent troops into Somalia in October to fight al Qaida-aligned al-Shabab militants.

In early March, a grenade attack in Nairobi killed in any case four people and injured about 40 others.

Kenya's government blames the al-Qaida-linked group of attacking and kidnapping foreign tourists on its territory.  But Al-Shabab has denied involvement in recent grenade attacks in Kenya.
