\'Idiots\' can ruin 2012 - Moynihan

The British Olympic Association (BOA) chairman Colin Moynihan says security features at London 2012 are being reviewed constantly to assist prevent a repeat of the Boat Race disruption.

But he warned it "just takes one idiot" to ruin an event.

Lord Moynihan told BBC Radio 5 live: "Both the police and security operations around all venues and athletes are being reviewed every day.

"It truly is if you want to have the highest chance of an incident-free games."

But he added: "It just takes one idiot, clone of the idiot [on the Boat Race], who causes major disruption. Thats why the entire security features have to be installed place to minimise the percentages of that taking place. You are able to never completely remove it but you are able to do everything possible to minimise it."

a person was charged over an incident which brought about the Boat Race being halted half-way through. Trenton Oldfield, 35, of Whitechapel, east London, will appear at Feltham Magistrates Court on 23 April charged under the general public Order Act.

Boat Race drama

  • In 2001, umpire Rupert Obholzer stopped the race after repeated warnings to both crews to go apart was followed by a clash of blades
  • The outcome have been determined by a sinking on three occasions: Cambridge sank in 1859 and 1978, Oxford in 1925
  • In 1912, both boats sank and the race was rescheduled for the next day to come
  • In 1951, Oxford sank and the race was rescheduled for 2 days later

Lord Moynihan told Sportsweek: "He obviously knew what he was doing. Both crews only take in a particularly small width of the river. To have gotten in there has been an exceptionally unexpected result. i'd never imagine anyone could get themselves into that position."

The BOA chairman, who competed within the Boat Race with Oxford, sympathised with the rowers suffering from the intruder.

He said: "Initially, my reaction is very large disappointment for the crews. These guys train for seven months - day in, outing.

"Its an extraordinary sporting event and for it to be effectively destroyed by the actions of a crazy guy, who was seriously putting his life in danger, was an incredible disappointment."

Race umpire John Garrett halted the race after his assistant, the four-time Olympic champion Sir Matthew Pinsent, spotted the protester within the water just after the crews had passed Chiswick Steps.

Pinsent said: "Its not ideal but given those circumstances what could we do- Its a security issue. Fortunately we spotted him and stopped the race. We couldnt possibly have carried on."

Olympic sports equivalent to sailing, cycling, open water swimming and the marathon appear at risk of similar issues.

Looking forward to London 2012, Lord Moynihan said: "Its so important to work closely with the police and security agencies and installed place every possible measure to guard the interests for the entire athletes coming from the 204 countries of the sector. In lots of respects, thats the most important ask of the Games this summer.

"Its not impossible but its a tremendous challenge. Its a challenge that have been taken on, to a degree that i haven't seen at a sporting event before. I dont think more may be done."
