Henson blows chance - Gwyn Jones

Former Wales captain Gwyn Jones believes Gavin Henson could have "blown" his attempt at rekindling his career brought on by an in-flight incident.

Henson has apologised for "inexcusable" alcohol-fuelled behaviour on a post-match weekend flight.

That brought about his immediate suspension by Cardiff Blues whose board could decide upon Monday whether to finish his contract or let him see the season out.

Jones told BBC Wales Scrum V: "i feel he might have blown it."

The Blues face Leinster in Dublin in a Heineken Cup quarter-final on Saturday fearing another Wales and British and Irish Lion centre, Jamie Roberts, might not be fit.

"Two Grand Slams and a British Lion and yet we still feel a big sense of under-fulfilment, of potential gone wastedรข€

Roberts injured a knee within the Blues 31-3 defeat by Glasgow on Friday night. The subsequent morning, Henson behaved in a way that prompted Sundays statement of apology.

Henson joined the Blues on an eight-month contract in October and previous Wales flanker Jones believes Henson might even see out the season with the Blues, but not remain there after that.

Namesake Robert, the previous Wales and British and Irish Lions scrum-half have been disappointed by Hensons on-field performances in stints at Saracens, Toulon and the Blues since his controversial 2010 departure from the Ospreys.

Gwyn Jones said: "And what do you consider the top of the Gavin Henson career if we're talking in regards to the end of it-

"Two Grand Slams and a British Lion and yet we still feel an enormous sense of under-fulfilment, of potential gone wasted, especially over the past four years.

"For just a few periods in his career has he been the player we all know that he may well be and everybody has tried to get him back involved."

The ex-Llanelli and Cardiff flanker is unsurprised Henson has once again been the topic of unsavoury headlines.

"Its no surprise that were talking about Henson and its got nothing to do with rugby," said Gwyn Jones.

"Its clear that he cant handle alcohol, he becomes one more person.

"And everyones tried giving him a possibility.

"[Wales coach Warren] Gatland and the Blues had been trying.

"But i believe its [about] a mixture of whether he cant handle being a perimeter player and the eye isnt on him or whether hes got the commitment for the sport to any extent further, I dont know.

"Because he realises, its the top of the season, everyones out of contract.

"Youre searching for your next job - try to be doing everything you are able to to secure a future.

"But I dont know if the appetite is there for him any longer.

"And whos going to sign this guy whos 30, who hasnt played well for four years and hes going to return with an entire load of bags-"

Robert Jones was equally pessimistic about Hensons probabilities of securing a rugby future if the Blues let him go.

"I cant see anyone else coming in and desirous to have a Gavin Henson on their books," said the ex-Swansea, Cardiff and Bristol player.
