We have seen virtual reality used to simulate the experience of being in space, to coach engineers or even to aid patients regain mobility, so it's no surprise that the army is recognizing VR's potential, too. The united states Special Operations Command recently announced that it's going to employ NeuroTracker -- a system currently used to coach athletes within the NFL and NHL -- to evaluate and improve commandos' response times and perceptive capabilities.
The VR setup tasks commandos with following the movements of 4 different balls projected on a 3D screen, the catch being that four "decoy" objects also are bouncing around. NeuroTracker assesses how well anyone can keep track of the designated targets, and likewise helps determine how she or he will be in a position to predict trajectories inside the field. Once a user has completed the 1st game, several variations come into play, including a version that accelerates the balls' movements and person who pits two players against one another. CogniSens, the corporate behind NeuroTracker, says the sport develops perceptive abilities a dead ringer for a workout develops muscles; there's even a high-intensity gameplay option that mixes the mental challenge with physical conditioning exercises.
